Hydra is an island of traditional character fairly close to the mainland. The name of the island in since ancient times was "Υδρέα" (Hydrea) reffering to the island's natural water springs.
The main town is built around the half moon shaped port and it is filled with tavernas, restaurants, shops and galleries. By law cars and motorcycles are not allowed on Hydra so donkeys, mules and horses as well as water taxis provide transportation.
Hydra is traditionally frequented by artistic types and wealthy Athenians. The island is very picturesque and if you would like to explore be ready for plenty of steps and uphill walks.
