Monemvasia is a town built on the side of a headland in the south eastern part of the Peloponnese which takes you by surprise. It is completely hidden from the mainland.
Connected by a causeway, this medieval town was a walled fortress with only one way in, as the name in Greek suggests (μόνη - moni + έμβαση emvasi = only access) making it a valuable stronghold throughout history.
Walk through the narrow streets and admire the Byzantine style town and see the churches & monasteries. Monemvasia is also known as "The Rock" or "Gilbraltar of Greece".
