Spetses is one of the Argosaronic islands off the coast of Argolida. It gets its name from the Italian word "spezie" which means spices but in ancient times it was called Pityussa (Πιτυούσσα).
The island of Spetses played an important roll during the uprising against the Ottomans and during the Greek Revolution later on. At one point the inhabitants made all their cargo ships into battleships to help the cause
Today Spetses is a traditional Greek island that attracts many visitors from all over the world.
